I wonder how long the initial excitement and fascination will last when/if we come in contact with alien life forms. How long before jealousy, desire for power, and the equivalent of racism start to become prevalent?

Here's a strange thought that was going through my head... we label people heterosexual, homosexual, and bisexual. What will we call humans who are attracted to aliens? Will there be "trisexual" humans, who like men, women, and aliens? Will there be discrimination and hate crimes against people who prefer alien partners? Will it even be legal to date an alien? Good grief...

The above is just one example of the strangeness that might result if we meet beings from anther world and have to interact with them. What do you think are some potential problems that we'll have to deal with when we meet our extraterrestrial neighbors? Do you think we are ready to handle such a meeting? If not, when will we be prepared?

Dan

I'm afraid all you just did was describe the world as it stands today. All the presence of aliens would do is add one more division.

Some have said that if extra terrestrials just landed in densely populated locations all over the globe there would result mass hysteria and chaos. Others have speculated that the mass dysfunctional behavior would go even one step further: planet wide insurrection and fratricidal civil collapse as in Rwanda ten years ago. But, if anybody has any sort of intelligence they would quickly pack up and fly away from such instability as fast as possible. That may be all the proof anybody would need that "they" are intelligent in that they'd get away from this planet of
technologically primitive barbaric violent crazies and never come back.

I don't know about technologically primitive, but as a whole, certainly intellectually primitive.
It may seem impossible to be intellectually primitive but technologically advanced until you realise that we owe our technological prowess to the top .0001% of intellects we have produced.

equalisation.

I think we,d pretend they didn,t exist so they wouldn,t upset our religeous concepts of science.

pat, you say some strange things. If you had have said 'religion' instead of 'science', at least it would have made some sense.

It would certainly be interesting to see how the major religions dealt with incontrovertible evidence that human beings aren't unique or special.

scientific religion

Yes true but this is fundamentally a science forum,so my comments are aimed in that direction.Dont worry I,ll have a dig at the established religions if this topic comes up on one of their sites.
