First I wanna just acknowledge the victims and the rest of the US and world regarding the terrorist attacks. My prayers are with all of you .

I like everyone else have been full of mixed feelings since Sept 11. I never thougtht I'd be a part of history this way. It's so amazing.

My imagination is pretty big . I thought of one thing days after Sept 11th cause what happened was so riviting to me that being the thinking man I am - I couldn't stop myself from brainstorming about what should be done about this terrorist stuff.

One thing that popped in my head was that I was wondering if the geniuses of the world would invent someting that is obviously right out of SCI FI but hey... lot's of the gadgets NASA guys use were born out of SCI FI also.

I thought of this: What if some geniuses invented a deflector shield that worked somehow ?? Like via electricity or something. What about a shield that could be invisible and be like a dome over any city? You stop letting planes go near any city for that matter. And maybe those shields can be used for other precious monuments and places as well. Even houses and stuff. I dunno ..

You all might laugh your ass off.. I do too... It's a crazy idea I KNOW>. But really its friggin 2001 why don't they even have something like that??

Is it possible to come up with some thing like that??

Like you have giant poles or something around NYC for instance. As tall as the Twin Towers were.... maybe taller... and they surround the city .... It could be computer controlled of course ... You turn in on and boom... The city is protected against accidents and terrorist attacks.

What do you all think ? (Besides that I maybe watched Star Wars Phantom Menace too much . Ja Ja Binks gang used a shield)

Hmm, because it would cost thousands of billions of dollars, to even begin research and some sort of initial prototype implementation. It would take a tramendous amount of time, and would use up a huge amount of power, and is probably not very feasable.

You want to stop terrorism, there are easier ways. Here are my suggestions:

(a) Stop the western/nato countries from bombing, attacking and generally pissing off every middle eastern country they can get their hands on.

(b) Stop trying to control the entire world and force american ideas on other people. Stop 'americanizing' every country with McDonalds, Nestle, and countless corporations, stop funding Israel, stop putting insane dictators into power just so you can get oil (Iraq), stop installing puppet governments everywhere (Iran, Saudi Arabia), and stop controlling governments to fight wars for you (Afghanistan).

I know, you will probably ignore me and just assume I have no idea what I am talking about. But thing about how difficult your "deflector shield" would be. No country is isolution, the shield would have to go down whenever a plane from a "friendly" country wanted to visit america. Would that still not make it possible for it to be hijacked once it was in american air space?

Infact, thinking about it now, you could put up millions of SAM/patriot missiles all around your country and in every city, and it would be more cheaper and effective than a "deflector shield", although it would not be very effective against nuclear weapons.

Very well said, those are probably the easiest way to prevent terrorist attacks from accruing. But I think bush and his friends have thought all about this in the past and are ready to "scarify" a couple of Americans for it. I mean they must surely know that these kinds of behaviours leads to conflict so who is the real threat? One thing is sure the world stood stunned and watched us go to war witch probably could have been solved whit just some talking and time. And I want to clear up one thing here: I do not hate the people in America only the dirty politicians.

I agree, fighting people who are ready to give their lifes for their cause is not as easy as bush thinks. If bush thinks continuing his foreign policy while attacking and bullying these nations will prevent terrorism, he is gravely mistaken. It will only be a catalyst for more terrorists, more martyrs, and really, you cant expect them to sit there and do nothing while people they care about are killed for because america doesnt like their ideas, or their religion, or wants their oil, or whatever reason happens to be on the agenda.

Personally, I want world peace. But this has to go both ways, you cant expect people to leave you alone if you do show nothing but hostility to them. War is not the solution, and all this money could goto better causes, such as space exploration.

Hey peoples: There are certain forbidden subjects....

on this website. These are:

Religion;
sexual oriented posts;
Politics (except knowledgeable critiques of NASA);
foul language;
subject matter that is potentially offensive to other users.

Just a friendly warning.

Admin doesnt give warnings (so I am told). If you get deleted once, you can be assured that the next offense will get you banned permanently.

Since many of you were not here in the "bad old times" of flame-wars, and really sick posts, you really didnt know how much of a "wild west" site this used to be

BIG brother/sister is watching

I was simply posting my opinions, but as you wish, I will keep my posts strictly about space space science and physics.

Let's assume it was possible... That every city had its deflector shield in place and that this shield could protect the city even from a 100 megaton nuke...

The planes would still have to get in somehow... And a terrosist could still steal a plane to crush it in a building. Terrorists could also bring a nuke inside the deflector shield....

This whole deflector shield concept seems more efficient to me for a war situation, where you need to be protected against bombing... Terrorists have more subtle and efficient methods of causing damage, they have been known to infiltrate lots of organizations without problems.

The only way to be protected from terrorism is to stop the united states from creating terrorists like Jedidan747 said.

Thumbs up

Max,
I recommend reading some books about Nikolas Tesla.
Apparently he was thinking in similar terms (although 100 years behind us now) of using directed electrical energy
at extremely high voltages and frequencies to act as
some sort of countermeasures to incoming hostile actions.
Try Frank Germano.com see what you come up with.
Re: nuclearphobes, either ignore them and shut them out of the discussion vis a vi nuclear powered spacecraft or
do like the security teams at Bangor Washington do.
Hose 'em down with ice cold sea water and drag 'em away.
Can't have no latter day hippie burnouts trespassing onto a
SSBN base. If you think that's brutal try sneaking into
a Russian SSBN base at Pol'yarny or in the Black Sea or
"Area 51" in Nevada!
Look at what those morons did in Chicago during the recent
war against Saddam Al-Hussien on Lake Shore Drive!

the main reason there isn't a deflector sheild over major cities is that according to the known laws of physicis it's not with in the relm of possiblity! there is no reason to even think it might be possible!

Cool

Mooner,
Not to be too blunt but it is VERY well within present
physics to deploy an anti-missle/aircraft system which
will prevent the kind of horror that occured in Mid town
Manhattan two years ago. A laser system fitted to an
Air Force C-141 Starlifter scored 100% kills (some only
a few seconds apart) of supersonic AIM-9 Sidewinder
air-to-air missles a few years back at a test location somewhere in the American Southwest. Ask R.J. he has
more details.
